No one guesses what strain of vaccine to use!!

Dear Editor,
I read with interest your letter to the editor in October 15 2005 edition of the Recorder. I find it interesting that the Stouffers have so little knowledge about the vaccine for influenza.

I workded in Infection Control for over half of my professional life and I can tell you that no one guesses what strain of vaccine to use. We in the northern hemisphere are fortunate to have influenza vaccine that is made from the prevailing strain of influenza in the southern hemisphere. No guess there, just plain illness that already exists. Yes the influenza vaccine is free to some Canadians. Some who require the vaccine must pay for it because they do not meet the criteria set by the Ministry of Health. And yes those who receive the vaccine know that even though they do not have to pay the person administering the vaccine, the taxes that we are each assessed pays for the vaccine and the salary of those who are administering it.

There are side effects to this medication as there are to every other medication but not every person experiences these side effects. These side effects include muscle soreness at the injection site, slight fever and maybe headache. I have never known anyone to have itching or loss of appetite or vomiting. I think the Stouffers are confusing influenza with stomach flu which is something altogether different. I would like to know if the Stouffers have any idea what the side effects are of coffee or for that matter of driving a car? Neither of which are side effect free. Do they insist on not driving or not drinking coffee?

As for the ingredients of the vaccine and the supposed effects of those ingredients well anyone with any medical knowledge goes to the source and does not rely on old wives tales.

I doubt that those who lost their son, daughter, father or mother when 40,000 people died in Canada and the USA in the pandemic of 1918 would hesitate to keep themselves safe in order to prevent such an event from occurring again. I sincerely pray that no one has listened with any seriousness to the Stouffers and their campaign to try to kill their fellow Canadians.

One last question for the Stouffers, are you willing to pay all your own medical, diagnostic and hospital expenses when you become ill with influenza?

What a load of crap.  Pardon my english, but here we go with the circus of fear.
If any of you can point me to some current real stats to use in my counter-rebuttal ...that would be great.
