Not suprising. In the 70's, my family had heavy levels of poly-brominated biphenyl(toxin) in our food supply. This was a huge coverup that was eventually called "cow-gate" in the papers. A fire retardant had accidentally been added to silage at grain silos. The chemical company that made the fire retardant also made a magnesium supplement. The chemicals were switched and PBB got added to the food supply. We had a very small farm for our own milk and vegetable supply. Unfortunately, we got some of the "tampered?" silage. The governmental arm of Michigan denied that anything was amiss. When farmers would call in about cattle deaths, anorexia, reduced/non-existant milk production, weeping sores on the bodies of the cattle, etc. they were told that their herd had an Iodine deficiency or some such nonsense. The agency also told the farmers that no other farmers were having similar problems. Obviously ill cows were dying on the auction block and still being sold for human consumption. Finally on a fluke, the problem was discovered by an independant farmer (and former chemist) who had sent samples to a lab in another state. Of course, after the story broke, other nations banned the import of US beef.
I had a little sister (6 months) who died at this time. She had been sick for several days, the vessels in her eyes broke, making her eyes blood red, after getting medication, her fever finally broke. Relieved, my mother went to rest for about half an hour before going back to her crib to find her warm but dead. Our family doctor did an autopsy and could find "no apparent reason for death." He called it pnemonia since there was a small amount of liquid in her lungs. My grandmother, who we lived with, and who had studied chemistry in college always blamed PBB for Sarah's death. I remember being visited by the michigan department of community health and having blood drawn. We all had outrageous amounts of pbb in our systems, as did tiny little Sarah, who was only 6 months at the time of her death. Our farm also had a high contamination percentage (parts per million/billion...) Since then, we have been in a study group though almost all of population of the state' (and nearby states/Candada) had some exposure.
During college (probably 12 years ago)I had severe asthma attacks, even a pulmonary embolism. I read a green peace article about pcb and respitory problems in baluga whales. I put 2+2 together...pcb is very close to pbb chemically, and baluga whales are also mammals. I went in search of information about pbb and its relationship to breathing problems in those with high levels in their bodies. I could only find old information that had no relation to breathing problems. However, my interest was piqued enough to read as much as I could. I found a reference to my family... the death of my sister... and a lot of facts about us. I spoke to my mother about it. She hadn't been told many of the facts that the writer was able to dig up about our situation. She remembers him coming out to interview us, but he interviewed rather than sharing information. And, given the coverup, the state never chose to share much. So, she didn't know the information until almost 20 years after the fact.
It is sad that avoiding public panic and protecting commercial interests sometimes becomes more important than protecting individuals! But, it doesn't surprise me one iota.
The good news is that the pbb reached it's 1/2 life a couple years ago. Now we only have half as much in our bodies! Yay.
Interesting. In doing more research just now, I find that steroidal problems are really related. I have several autoimmune problems. Eczema, allergies, asthma... the liver and kidneys are common problem areas. Perhaps it is time to do some more flushes! Well, sorry this was so long winded and not so much about mad cow. I guess I am just really invested in the way these problems come into being. Especially when we have been reassured that meat products are not being fed to our animals. Just another lie. I haven't eaten meat for 14 years, but I guess it is time to get off of dairy to as it can also contain the BSE/CJD virus.
