Hello ladies (and gentlemen): I have the coarsest, dry, brittle hair in the world. The ONLY thing that softens it is avocado oil, either a drop in my daily conditioner, or 1/8 cup in my deep conditioner, every week or two. I also put a drop in my deep conditioner. I also heard about Mane'n Tail shampoo, but can't vouch for it. The only place I've found avocado oil is health food stores.
