Now lets look at this passage in a few different translations and then in contextNow
lets look at this passage in a few different translations and then in context.

New Living Translation
1 John 3:1
See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called
his children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't
know God, so they don't understand that we are his children.

King James Version
1 John 3:1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be
called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him
not.

Amplified Version
1 John 3:1
SEE WHAT [an incredible] quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed
on) us, that we should [be permitted to] be named and called and counted the
children of God! And so we are! The reason that the world does not know
(recognize, acknowledge) us is that it does not know (recognize, acknowledge)
Him.

The Message
1 John 3:1
What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it--we're called
children of God! That's who we really are. But that's also why the world doesn't
recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who he is or what he's
up to.

Now for some context - not just a verse that man takes to mean what he wants!

New Living Translation
1 John 3:1-9
See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called
his children, and we really are! But the people who belong to this world don't
know God, so they don't understand that we are his children. Yes, dear friends,
we are already God's children, and we can't even imagine what we will be like
when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for
we will see him as he really is. And all who believe this will keep themselves
pure, just as Christ is pure.
Those who sin are opposed to the law of God, for all sin opposes the law of God.
And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, for there is no sin in him.
So if we continue to live in him, we won't sin either. But those who keep on
sinning have never known him or understood who he is.
Dear children, don't let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is
right, it is because they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. But when
people keep on sinning, it shows they belong to the Devil, who has been sinning
since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy these works of the
Devil. Those who have been born into God's family do not sin, because God's life
is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they have been born of God.
So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the Devil.
Anyone who does not obey God's commands and does not love other Christians does
not belong to God.

New King James Version
1 John 3:1-9
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be
called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not
know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed
what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him,
for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies
himself, just as He is pure.
Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you
know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known
Him.
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is
righteous, just as He is righteous. 8He who sins is of the devil, for the devil
has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does
not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been
born of God.

We are never just born of God. We are born into sin. But when we come to
repentance through Jesus Christ, we are then born of God. It is our choice.
No one can call themselves sons and daughters of God, if they have not come to
full repentance through their Saviour Jesus Christ, and then turning their life
around with God's Loving Mercy and help, and living for God.

Get out from man's teachings, they will not save you. Only God can do that, and
remember it is blasphemous to teach God's word out of context.

The only way to repentance and a true life for God is, through Jesus Christ. God,
loves us so much that He sent His only son to be the ultimate sacrifice for our
sins. That is the only LOVE that comes into salvation - God's love for us.
