" But are you ok with these synthetic preparations?"
If I could afford it, I would switch to the anstrom minerals Lapis recommends. My Naturopath is OK with the mineral supplements, although more leary of the cheap vitamins (he says some are good, many are not). The problem is, only a small percentage of the minerals are actually absorbed by the body, they are too large and only a minimal amount is broken down to the size they need to be for cellular absorption. For magnesium oxide, the absorption rate is like 4% of the Mg in a 400 mg pills is utilized by the body. With magnesium the gut can get rid of the excess by flushing it out. However, many calcium compounds are only 2% absorable and the body can store the excess mineral in joints and even blood vessels. That is why I prefer to use whole foods like broccoli and cantaloupes to get the bulk of calcium and only use a minimun of supplements. I assume the compounds, cal+mag and cal+vitamin D are better than the straight calcium carbonate typically sold. My bottle of lime water always has a layer of powder in the bottom. I do not think calcium hydroxide can be absorbed any better than other "rock" minerals. It will go into suspension for a few minutes, but not into solution. Therefore I would imagine that some will combine with stomach acid to produce CO2 (gas), and most of the rest will be eliminated or stored in the body like the other rock calciums.
