I had some fillings done today, all Amalgam ( :( insurance still listens to ADA, so composites cost a lot more, and I wasn't really presented an option or told of the 50% mercury and potential health problems beforehand. ). I like my dentist because he does a good job on my teeth and fillings compared to my last dentist(s) who messed up a lot of things in my mouth, but I was concerned today when he drilled my old Amalgam fillings to fill the teeth. When drilling the bits and pieces were flying all over my mouth. After drilling and rinsing I was rinsing out tons of tiny particles of amalgam, and now that I'm home and flossing I'm still getting little bits of it out on my floss. I think I might have accidentally swallowed a few chips of it from a relfex swallow sometime during the procedure as it was flying everywhere in my mouth.

After the appointment I had a big headache and was very loopy. I figured it was just all the sitting back and novacaine. When I got home I had a lot of things to do, but I just sort of dozed off. I woke up 12 hours later, still very loopy. It's about 3 hours after I woke up now and I'm getting small headaches. Immediately after waking up I went to the bathroom to wash my mouth out with water, you know.. morning breath and all that. I started coughing up a lot of phlem, and some blood came up too.

After researching online, originally to find out if maybe drillings can just make a person loopy and sick for a day or two, I ran into the entire Amalgam thing.. about it is 50% mercury, can cause sickness, release murcury vapor.. but also that when amalgam is drilled out precautions should be taken because the toxity levels can reach thousands of times the safe dose. Well, I didn't have any oxygin or air mask, and it wasn't taken out in chunks, and it was everywhere.

So with the possibility that my appointment might have given me a large dose of murcury, will this go away? Will my body be able to get rid of the mercury if that's what is causing my headaches?

I still need more fillings on the opposite side of my mouth (put off going to the dentist for a long time). What do I do and how do I ask my dentist to not expose me to murcury vapors without offending him? I don't want to have to find another dentist because of how bad my last dentist team buchered me (failed root canal, not telling me what to do with my root canaled tooth, not offering to place a temporary cap to see how it feels, 3 fillings that bothered me after ad still bother me, each fillings left huge chunks of filling in odd places, two of which were connected to each other so it made it impossible to floss.. impossible for me to care for my ginigivitis in that area) Ok, well I don't want to tell me tale of the last dentist, and more to focus on this small problem.. but I just want to stress how important it is to me that I don't ruin my relationship with my new dentist. Even though he's careless with murcury and I feel sick now, I had other fillings done 2 days ago (amalgam :\ ) but they came out really well.. and one of them was very big and saved me a root canal (the other place was just going to root canal it).

So, he's a very talented dentist.. I know this first hand now, and he came highly recommended by a friend too. If I have more amalgam that has to get drilled out, is it ok and normal to ask for an air mask or some other way to lessen my exposure to poisonous vapors as much as possible?

Also I was wondering if any of you forsee insurance companies stepping up and maybe listening to the toxicologists and research companies and provide better covereage for composites? A main reasons I don't want composites is because with the amount of dental work I need done I think it would cost a ton more money, and I'm sure if it's even an option if I would pay.. with the amount of time I've avoided dental work and the bad experience i had with my last, I'm not in the mood to be very picky, and I'd rather just be able to trust a dentist and let him do what he thinks is best for my dental, oral, and overall health. I mean, he is the professional, if these poisons were a real huge danger then he wouldn't use them/drill them right?
