If you chew on something metalic,ie:aluminum foil, you get the same painful experience as with mercury fillings. The glue does not appear to insulate them. On the other hand gold fillings have an expansion rate which is closest to tooth material (compared to ceramic or composite) which may be why they can last so long. I had 18 Amalgams replaced with gold. Ceramics have some aluminum in them and composites have a variety of substances in them.
