I would suggest he apply lapaucho herbal tea compresses about 4 times a day for
20 minutes each time,
also to drink tea of same herb.
this herb is also called pau d arco and is a great help to a wide variety
of problems.
esp great for herpes , etc, candida/thrush problems

I buy my herbs from

if you buy the bark , cold soak it overnight
about 3-4 tablespoons to 3 cups of water
in a non metal pot.
then in morning, let boil for about 15 minutes (no more)
or it will be bitter.
strain.

pour off one cup (8 oz) for doses internally.
take about 1/4 a cup dose from this, 4 times a day .

into the remaining decoction in the pot,
use 2 strips of flannel or cotton or muslin
and dip both in the warm tea.
take out ONE and lay it on sores.

when it cools down , set it aside and use the other strip.
when you are ready to do another compress later,
reheat the tea and use fresh strips of material.

other herbs good for herpes include:

hyssop, juniper, lemon balm, licorace,sage
peppermint, rhubarb, witch hazel,elderberry

hope this is of help.
btw anytime in the past that i have ever gotten a cold sore,
i apply a small paste of crushed sage with a bit of warm oil directly to the sore..
about 3 times a day.
then at night use a bandaid to apply paste for sleeping
so as not to stain pillows etc..
usually the cold sore clears up within 1-2 days no scarring.

Also pascalite clay might be of great help
you can get that at same website I believe.

I apply a small dab mixed with a few water drops to any insect bites I get.
about 3 times a day it greatly reduces pain and itching of the area,
and keeps it from spreading.. since most of my bites are from
hobo or recluse spiders, this is a great value clay to me.

it is also effective against coldsores/herpes sores etc
(see the info on it at this link where I buy mine from )
