There is nothing I can add to what Lapis has already written except that no body should be drinking 3-4 gallons of water a day. While it is essential to get adequate water to keep the body well hydrated, too much of any kind of water is dangerous. Too much water will flush out essential minerals which can be devastating to the heart and nervous system. Excess water stresses the kidneys and impair their primary function of filtering waste and excess minerals from the blood. When the blood lacks a ready supply of readily available organic calcium it will leach the bones in an effort to control ph levels. All that water is probably flushing out calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium your wife gets from her healthy diet.
Tapering her daily water consumption to 64 ounces (which is still slightly more than half her body weight in ounces), eliminating most or all acid producing foods from her diet, and even getting a good spinal adjustment should help alleviate many of your wife's symptoms.
Four years ago my MD prescribed Nexium for what he diagnosed as severe GERD. He had me scared silly saying I was a candidate for esophageal cancer because my reflux disease was so severe. I was told I would need to be on Nexium the rest of my life, as well as blood pressure medication and antidepressants. Three years ago I began having chiropractic adjustments. The Gerd disappeared within weeks, I have only had one mild attack of reflux since. I am prescription free.
