I tried reading the "side effects" link on the Detoxamin site and it locked up my computer. I'll try it again later... be careful if you have another important program running.
I really don't know a lot about chelation - our government won't use our tax dollars to hold unbiased studies on natural medicines like ala and cilantro chelators. Some people like Andrew Cutler say to chelate the body first, then the brain with chelators that cross the blood brain barrier. This minimizes the mercury that is re-deposited from the body into the brain during chelation. Any chelation afaik will stir up and re-deposit metals, and I'd imagine Detoxamin is no different. Is it really better to introduce a chelator through the colon wall? How efficient is it? Is it all absorbed? Are bound toxins released through the urine or bowels?
Some people have been hurt by using chelators, and some sites on the web testify to the dangers of DMPS, DMSA, etc... I am a skeptic, and I do question products like Detoxamin - is it really as powerful as the other chelators as it claims, and if so doesn't that mean it carries the same hazards? And why is it so expensive?
I'd be really careful if you are considering chelating a baby. I wouldn't do it. There is just way way too much possible risk to such a small and growing baby and any benefit would be questionable at best. Do you know if the baby is even high in metals, as in a reliable lab test? I'd imagine the best thing to do would be to prevent any further metals injestion and skip the chelation. For instance, demand non-thimerosol (mercury) vaccines and non-amalgam fillings later on, plus clean filtered water and natural cleaning products, etc...
I know you are trying to do the best for your baby. That's a lucky kid you have there. :)
