Algin is well-known for absorbing mercury. I use it when doing something that I know causes relapses of mercury symptoms (like eating fish).

Algin lets me enjoy the benefits of fish without having mercury symptoms I would normally have after eating fish.

As for testing...

This is a difficult subject because knowing which tests to give and then properly interpreting the tests takes skill and knowledge.

I would recommend the book, Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment by Dr. Andrew Cutler for excellent technical details about this. He even tells you to loan the book to your doctor so he can better help you.
