So....if he didn't like gays bc he feels its disgusting, but NOT a matter of his religion, then it would be okay to want to ban gay marriages???

IMHO, whether or not religion has to do with it, everyone knows instinctively that homosexuality is a perversion. The reason is bc two males/two females CANNOT procreate in the natural schemes of things. Both sexes need each other do their part in regenerating the our species.
