There is a deeper issue here and it is not the emotional heart rending "right to live" smokescreen. Her death is a personal tragedy that should have never become the demeaning political sideshow that it did - but it did and nothing we do can change that. The attack on the very foundations of our Constitution is a public tragedy. We could not stop the first. We must stop the second.

Never before has our government written a law for only one person. There are laws that were inspired by what happened to one, but they have an effect on the population, NOT ONE PERSON. Now they are making comments about checking the power of the Judicial system. That is WRONG. That is NOT how our government was conceived. Our system works BECAUSE we have the checks and balances to ensure the Constitution is protected, not in spite of them.

The Judicial system, plain and simply, followed the LAW. They did not kill Terri. To make that jump is an insult to them, to her, and to the intelligence of every one of us. The courts reviewed the facts presented and they ruled BY THE LAW AS THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO.

To anyone who feels otherwise, I pray you go back and restudy what civics class taught. READ the Constitution. READ the letters our Founding Fathers wrote to one another discussing their grand ideal.

The attack on marriage is frightening but the attack on the very foundations of our government are so much worse.

May Terri Schiavo rest in peace. May her family find solace and healing. But please, may we all not let her death be in vain by ignoring the enormity of the dangerous precedents the Congress and the President are setting in regards to her plight.

Here are a few excerpts from some opinions on another site. If the page is still active, please go read all of them.

"Placing the religious reasons for marriage aside for a moment, isn't one of the points of marriage the legal right to make decisions for a spouse when they are incapacitated? By not allowing Michael to make difficult decisions for his wife, Republicans are making marriage - at least the legal side of it - worthless."

"Republicans can't have it both ways. Last fall, we saw the Republicans' true colors when they argued marriage should be allowed only for certain Americans. Today they are saying even if you are permitted to be married, you probably won't be able to make legal decisions on your spouse's behalf."

"I am a Republican and have been since I was old enough to vote. I firmly believe in the GOP, and I trust in the party to lead in the best interests of our nation and our people. With this said, I would like to voice my disapproval of the House and Senate Republicans' push for the reinsertion of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube."

"It is the bigger picture we must see here. The legislative branch, which is trusted to enact laws to govern our society, has boldly and unconstitutionally barged into the domain of the judicial system. In doing so, Congress has caused me to question the motives of my fellow Republicans as well as the few Democrats who chose to side with them on this issue.

If legislators wish to pursue this case, they should use legal and constitutionally acceptable methods. Instead, they have chosen to abuse a backdoor in the legal system, to push aside the separation of powers built into our beloved Constitution and attempt to regulate the affairs of a private individual through legislation.

This was not the intent of our founding fathers. President Bush said the legislative branch and the executive branch ought to err on the side of life. What he does not understand is that by doing so, he has disregarded the principles he swore on a Bible to protect and defend. He has allowed his beliefs to conflict with his duty to defend the Constitution and his duty to the United States of America."
