First off, I am 77 and am in excellent physical health, swimming a mile in 40 minutes 3X weekly and the other days followng a rigourous weight and aerobic workout. About a week ago I started expiencing chest discomfort, an abnormal frequency of PVC's and PAC's, an enormous amount of upper gastric gas (bloating), mild shortness of breath. I suspended my exercize program, called my family physician (who was not available). His nurse urged that I report into the nearest ER, which I did. After spending 5 hours there, being given the standard ECG, X-Ray, and some enzyme checking blood work, I was released. The attending ER physician felt that I did not have a heart related condition, but could not explain the symptoms and urged me to check with my doctor the following day. I did. He did some more checking and was of a similar feeling as the ER physician. He ordered some more blood workup, prescribed Toprol XL 25 mgs 1 X daily. Since a year ago I had a Holter procedure and a thalium stress test, he did not feel that it was necessary to repeat these tests. He set up an appointment for me with a cardiologist. In the meantime I consulted my Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, looking under HIATEL HERNIA. Some years ago, I have been told by medical people that I do have such a mild condition. However, I do not experience the acid reflux that is highlighted as one of the major symptoms. I am wondering if the hiatel hernia condition could cause the type of symptoms I am experiencing. Oh yes, my resting pulse rate ranges between 54 and 64 and BP is running 146/75. Normally my BP runs lower than 120/75. I am really searching for some direction on diagnosing my problem and then if it is hiatel hernia, what to do about it. I would like to resume my regular workout program. The family doctor had me suspend such activity until I can get an adequate diagnosis. I would very much apprciate any feedback that might be offerred. Thanks again, Fritzi.
