Well, you must definitely find good care for your dogs and do it as soon as you can.
Mr. Goenka, who runs the trust that conducts the course explains that not everyone has a chance to attend a course -- it is your good karma that leads you to it. I stumbled upon it a few years ago and finally dragged myself to Essex, 8 hours from where I live in my last Easter holidays.
After I got back from the course, it was fascinating but I could see negative thoughts entering my mind and could release them by just being aware of it. I was so free from the ego but it is a simple technique and can be practised with a bit of discipline. I was attuned to my body and felt the most minor sensations such as feeling my heart beat or my spinal cord or the precise point where my breath entered my nostril. I was calm and found nothing upset me easily. I say was because I have been studying very hard and could not practise regularly. But my concentration levels zoomed up as a result of the meditation.
For those keen, there is a strict code of discipline and you mostly have to sit on the floor, without moving, and for long periods, and most of the waking hours in the course are spent on meditation.
The food was the healthiest organic food with loads of herbal teas - actual herbs not tea bags such as camomile leaves - and lots of warm water with lime and salads and it was just delicious and healthy. My skin glowed after it. In fact, on the last day you are allowed to speak to others and that's where I met a naturopath who told me I should clean my liver as in Chinese medicine spring was the liver season ( It was spring then).
In the evenings, there is a video discourse by Goenka, possibly the only conversation you will have in ten days and you can only listen and laugh. It is humorous and filled with wisdom.
I realised exactly how I create misery - with my own thoughts...and how I can change things by understanding this. This is a simple link to understand more about it -- http://www.dhamma.org/art.htm
I have to do a few more courses to really ' get ' it but if the Buddha attained Nirvana through it, so can I.
Shelley, I hope you do it and then tell me! And us all! :)
