I think you are right in assuming your insurance will not cover the cost as it will be considered "elective" on your part.
Don't be surprised if you are asked to sign a CYA document to the effect that the dentist didn't talk you into doing this procedure and tried to talk you out of doing it. This happened to me when I had my root canals removed.
Whatever you do, have the work done. Your health depends on it.
