Ah, okay, the underlying emotional reasons for eating... we haven't talked about those very much in this forum, so great that you asked this question! They are very powerful indeed! It's always good to do what you can to ameliorate the physical reasons for cravings, as that will help, but the emotional must be addressed as well.
Okay. There's a cycle of addiction that has to be shorted out. Like Pavlov's dogs, you have to train your brain/body/nervous system to drool when it's time to eat healthy foods, rather than focus on inappropriate foods. The brain/nervous system learns through repetition and association, and emotions follow thoughts and beliefs. The mental gives birth to the emotional. So here are some guidelines for "rewiring."
1. Positive Affirmations. Best done while meditating, or in that state right before you fall asleep, you need to state with your mental voice things like:
- I am greater than my habits.
- I have achieved vital health.
- I love my body and ask that every cell join me in raising its vibration and achieve vital health.
... and anything else that speaks to your state of mind and being. Visualize a symbol that represents the affirmation.
You can also do these while wide awake, but then it's best to state them out loud, with power and force.
2. For a time, give yourself 100% permission to eat anything. This takes away the whole shame game that causes obsessive-compulsive disorder. And after eating a dozen Snickers I guarantee that you'll start craving salad! ;) Make your only rules these rules:
1. You have to wait until you're hungry before you can eat. Wait until you are VERY hungry.
2. You have to stop when you're at all full.
3. Don't eat healthy things after the cheat to 'make up for them,' just stop, consider the cheat the entire meal.
4. Eat exactly what you want no matter what it is. Enjoy it. Pay attention to it - don't eat while watching TV, for instance. No unconscious eating allowed. No guilt allowed either.
5. Pay attention to your body and let it tell you what it wants.
3. People tend to use food as a way to reward themselves for good behaviors. Make a list of 10 things you can do to reward yourself that are fun, cheap and easy and don't include food.
4. If you're using food as a way to distract yourself from what's really bothering you in your life, DON'T. If there's someone you need to tell off, tell them off. Write it in a letter. You don't have to mail it. Do some introspection and find out what's REALLy bugging you and DEAL with it. Do exercises that help you let it go. Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization book has great exercises for this.
5. Find ways to laugh every day and let the inner child come out to play. finger paint, play with dogs, play with kids at a playground, get silly with friends, watch comedies, as much as you can.
Hope that helps! :)
