Havent read the book but I would say soy! Its toxic ! It was first grown in the midwestern states because birds ,crows in particular will not eat it. Im not sure if there is another bean that is consumed as human food that is as toxic ,but i believe beans as many plants do, simply use these toxins as a self defense mechanism to discourage being consumed. Soy the most noted!
