My information tells me that nystatin works through from mouth to anus only. I believe some people are affected by the waste products, the poisons or toxins produced by the yeast organisms in the intestines. Those toxins affect all of us sufferers in different ways, whether it's eyes, ears, sinuses, skin, hair pores, mouth, etc. It's been very difficult for researchers to prove that some candida sufferers have actual yeast in their blood and thus, in their eyes, sinuses, etc.

Some people do have yeast in those places, but the general (holistic) consensus is that yeast in the blood is quite rare, and that most people who suffer so radically are suffering from the toxins produced by the yeast in the intestines. The test for yeast in the blood is quite an endeavor. It is not always found, and this could be because the lab does not use the right equipment. The microscope that should be used is quite expensive and most labs do not invest in such equipment. So the other problem is that they look for it using other inappropriate testing.

Because of this testing problem, most holistic docs you talk to are on the fence whether actual candida in the blood is an actual common occurrance.

What I have heard is that if you do have yeast in your blood (and thus everywhere else) you would likely be hospitalized, throwing up, with yeasty goo coming out of every orofice, and of course, along with many other symptoms such as the ones described here on the board. This usually happens after one has had intestinal candidiasis for a long time and where the yeast threads have "drilled" through the intestinal wall and go systemic. Yeast in the blood may be more common in those severely immuno-compromised, like those with AIDS, cancer, diabetes, lupus, etc.

So, getting back to the question at hand, nystatin is generally for the intestines only. It is not metabolized through the liver, so it will not work directly in the blood stream and travel to all parts of the body. In fact, it is a yeast found in the earth, used to kill other yeasts. I believe it is better than any other intestinal antifungal, yet I think it runs close in efficiency to grapefruit seed extract (GSE).
