Bile salts are just a replacement for the bile that my gallbladder can no longer store (since it's gone). Without a gallbladder, the liver just "dumps" bile when it feels like it. With bile salts, I take them (1 or 2 caps) just before I eat anything with fat (and before my fish oil supplements) so that the fat is emulsified (broken down into baby fat globules that lipase can actually work on). I think that all the fat soluble vitamins were just not getting through my digestive wall well either - and omega-3s likewise - untill I started on bile salts.
