Dear fledgling,
Thank you for your kind words.
I'll add some of mine here :
You wrote : "The shock last Saturday was that I pigged out. I suspended my own common sense, and fell back to my former behaviour...and ate more later! All the while I knew it was a mistake. I kept remembering recent successes where I completely lost all desire for the 'other' stuff. How could I have fallen back so completely?"
Exactly!!
Well that is not difficult to understand. My brother's hand went to the Mono-Sodium-Glutamat (Natrium Glutamat) stuff. He did not know they were the ones he needed!
You are being driven AGAINST YOUR WILL to products you don't want.
You are certainly not to blame.
My theory is that you were not really weaned and that, in that case, you were in need. That's all.
It is quite easy really to loose all desire for MSG/Aspartame, it only takes a few days off the stuff.
The chances are that you took some in a hidden form before going on the binge and this rekindled the fire.
I just gave a list of hidden Mono-Sodium-Glutamat (Natrium Glutamat) sources in another post:

Sometimes I also find that I crave Mono-Sodium-Glutamat (Natrium Glutamat) if I am in a conflictual situation. In that case what it really means is my body needs Sugar (for the fight or for the flight option, both). This is because MSG has an effect on insulin production andmy body knows it can get it easily with a shot of MSG. In that case I eat something sweet (or have cup of coffee - instant coffee does not qualify!!- with something sweet). No craving left.
I hear what you think : SUGAR!!!! Arghh!
Unless you are a serious diabetic, a spoon or two of real Sugar (tested! remember!!) is much less harmful that a Sugar substitute.
If the worst comes to the worst, you'll get on a sugar binge. Harmless really! It will stop of its own accord much earlier than an MSG binge. Weight problem? No problem really, because you'll ingest MORE calories on an MSG binge than on a sugar binge (because it stops much sooner being only one of the reasons).
Also what you eat on a sugar binge (with no MSG or Aspartame in it of course!!!!!) is much healthier. At least your body can do something with it, it is real food.
And a sugar binge (lets make pancakes!!! or "only one turkish delight with my coffee" pleasantly dissolves all the bad feelings you may be having (thinking of the unpleasantness of having a guest criticize/supervise your cooking in your case maybe!), and it leaves you with nice memories!!!! No more "I pigged out", rather "she couldn't wipe the smile off my face" and "everybody really enjoyed this special treat (remember though that the sugar treat has to remain special).
Candida problem? Yes, but all that fake sugar is making it WORSE, and in the meantime your health is going down because actually you are being starved to death.
Really, all it takes is to be MSG free for a few days. Then you do not have to do battle against your own will.
The problem is in the "MSG free". There is MSG in everything manufactured now and I am glad I can test stuff with my pendulum.
This ensures that you stay continually hooked.
My theory is that I am not the only one to have discovered that millions of hands in supermarkets around the world are reaching towards the MSG laden products.
I am sure big companies set up mock-supermarket environments to test customers reactions. They must have discovered this long ago. Otherwise why would I have found out that my washing machine powder was full of MSG? And please don't tell me that it is necessary in the manufacturing process! It did not even EXIST as an ingredient in the industry 20 years ago, and we had washing machines then!
I suspect that MSG is added to ALL products now because there is not a single manufacturer wio can afford to see his products spurned by hooked housewives who choose the good MSG product instead of theirs!
The problem is, when you realize it is not your fault, the next step is to understand that most people like to be addicted, never mind the consequences.
I was desperate because I thought that without a collective action and an enforcement of law from above, my life was wrecked and I had to live it as a perpetual fugutive/victim, being poisoned again and again, suffering theses attacks on my will and my mind.
But now I have the absolute weapon!!! In the last months I did have some relapses (something not tested, so obvious it was that it was safe ha! ha! - eating at a friend's place - left stranded 2 nights at an airport without real food - etc). But because I put a stop to the binge with sugar (or a nice plate of home made pasta if I had time), I actually took in very little MSG during that time, and all my symptoms have receded dramatically. The other things I did to get better worked at last. I lost 12 kilos in 8 months without dieting, eating normally (only REAL food, but that was what I was eating before, only there was hidden MSG in it). Most of my pains are gone.
Especially the one in my mind, that said I was an unreliable weak willed worm!
One last word :
What you say about having gone hungry in the past can only give you a healthy respect for food. Good for you in fact. Young people who never had to look for food are suffering the same pangs of MSG addiction that you experience.
To sum it up : IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!
Good luck and warmest wishes,
Kalliopi
