Do you think there is a possibility that candida also uses mercury as a "kamikaze-esque" defense mechanism? I read that antibodies can be "attacked" by [methyl]mercury, since they contain sulfur.
It is a known fact that candida albicans is very resistant to mercury. I couldn't find any study showing that it grabs and hold the mercury within its cell, but a lot of websites say so. The only related study on pubmed.com is one not accessible but titled "[Disappearance of mercury introduced into culture media where a yeast (Candida utilis) is growing.]".
