I am in the middle of doing lots of research into the effects on magnesium deficiency especially for those with candida. Here is what I learned so far.
Magnesium is absorbed only thru the intestines. If one has any illness which prevents intestines from functioning correctly, namely, candida, ibs, crohns disease etc, magnesium will NOT be absorbed.
Magnesium deficiency cause a scary myriad of symptoms including
Anxiety / panic attacks
jitteriness
nervousness
sensitivity to noise
weakness
heartbeat irregularirites such as rapid heartbeat, skipping beats etc
chronic pain
muscle fatique
According to what I read , most people in the US are short on magnesium, but if you have an underlying illness preventing absorbtion, you are most likely really deficient.
I know many of us suffer with bizarre symptoms myself included. Last week I began taking calcium magnesium supplements and the annoying and scary burning sensation I had in my head completely went away along with the disorientation and I felt great. I was taking the maximum dosage of calcium, magnesium along with whatever would be in a multi vitamin.
However, this week started off with diarrhea , cramping, which I intially thought might be die off. Then I began feeling incredibly anxious all over , shaky , weak, feeling faint, rapid heartbeat and the burning returned. I have not been able to even get any work done all week, At first I did not understand why. But as I looked into magesium I learned that if you take too much it will cause diarrhea which will then cause a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium induced magnesium deficiency it is called. Taking too much, or more than your body can absorb ( and everyone is different) causes diarrhea which causes you to lose the magnesium you took + more creating and even more pronounced deficiency.
The key to taking magnesium seems to be two fold. First off it is supposedly much better to take alone without calcium until you get balanced, second start off with low low doses.
Also keep in mind it is said it can take 6 weeks before relief is felt.
I will continue to do research on this issue and I have ordered blood tests for myself to see what exactly is going on including a magnesium rbc blood tests which not only tells if you are low on magnesium but tells you how much is functioning in your system. Will post my results to see if my theories are correct.
