Hi John,
I'm pursuing some lines of enquiry. Thanks for asking. Its too early to say if I've made any progress yet.
There is certainly some truth in the individual being compromised inviting illness. But we know that pathogens do exist and that they are the ultimate cause of illness. Yet we are exposed to pathogens all the time without falling ill. So clearly there are factors other than mere pathogens involved in illness. The immune system/body is the obvious factor. There is a whole Science of this called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). Now my illness was preceeded by a period of prolonged stress. Yet once I was ill it didn't matter if you remove the stress. The illness has taken hold. So if candida is the symptom what is the disease? Stress? I am stress free - now. Doesn't stop me being ill.
Clearly infectious diseases do exist. Although candida isn't an infectious disease. Rather it is an opportunistic pathogen kept at bay by a healthy immune system / gut flora. Take one or both of these away and the harmless yeast becomes an agressive pathogen.
The protit theory reminds me of the smell theory of disease. Before germs were discovered it was widely believed that disease was caused by foul smelling odours. After all foul smells always accompanied disease producing environments. Its a perfectly logical theory. It even resulted in many advancements in public hygeine - e.g. sewage systems. And it cured disease - the theory appeared to be vindicated. Yet ultimately it was wrong.
