The easiest way I have found is to take the coconut and place it in two or three plastic sacks, like from walmart.
Take this outside and "WHACK" it on the sidewalk or a sharp edge of something concrete (my stone bbq pit works great).
It is a sickenly thunk on the sidewalk. It sounds like I would imagine a head on a rock.
But it works great.
