I would also lend my experience to the successes of Atkins.Mine was not for weight loss however!! I don't seem to have that problem... lucky, or exersize , I guess. Exersize didn't help me avoid 'bowel problems' though...and bowel problems is actually a large part of Dr. Atkins' motivation to develop this diet.
For several years I had the condition known to as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS. The pain was outrageous, I could not believe I was not going to split in half!! The anxiety that went with it was so crazy too...
Then, a few years ago, I started cutting out carbs.I don't know if I heard of Atkins or just the idea at that time. I later read up on Atkins, from original texts. It was difficult, as anyone who has done in will know, to cut out the "fast carbs", due to the way the grocery stores shelves are lined with this stuff.
Anyway, once I figured out that the BLOATING in the lower abdomen was much worse when I ate pasta, potatoes, rice, corn and wheat and other grains, and esp BREAD, I started to over come the IBS. [and Of course, Sugar itself is one of the offending foods.]
Even constipation was worse with the carb foods.
Now its very much under control, but when I get stupid and give in to the cravings for carbs [usually because I ate carbs!!], the bloat returns. Now, I know what to do...
We have been so centred around eating carb-foods all our lives, a bit of brainwashing from the 1950's promotion of food processing.
Grain crops are 'much higher profit makers' than other crops like meats fruits and veggies, simply because of "value added" economics. They can do so much with grains and hydrogenated oils to make delicious foods that don't need a lot of preparation.Cheap labour and cheap input costs made processing that way to go for those making money off it.
Our guts and our waistlines didn't have the same benefits from processing!!
This is why I really really cringe when I see products on the shelves that say "ATKINS FRIENDLY", it the opposite of what Dr. Atkins was doing. They flooded the market after his death, or just before as Grog noticed the changes happen.
Also, Subway's "Atkins friendly sandwiches" are NOT something Dr.Atkins would eat!! Bread is "hi-carb", no matter what, right?
I asked store managers at Subway "how this bread isn't a hi-carb food"? , and they pointed out it was 'unleavened' pita bread.. which doesn't answer the question.
She got huffy and snarked at me:"I don't CARE what Dr. ATkins eats!!" I got bloated and had a terrible morning the next day... I knew it was risky to eat it, I was caught up in a hunger-lazy situation and really craved the sub that day - I DID IT FOR THE GREATER GOOD, I had to try it out and expose the hoax!! Yea me, I sacrficed my bowel for you all!! [ha ha ha]
Pity the store managers caught between a conscience and chain-store directives,
Karlin
