I must agree with you that traditional christianity is partisan (supports and endorses God and thinks that 'voting' for Jesus makes them a 'good' person), but the common teaching about God is misguided because we only understand ACCORDING TO HUMAN NATURE (human nature is human folly, foolishness) that the bible is real (and contains what He SAID long ago, His Spirit, the living character of God tells us what He SAYS today Ephesians 6:17), I will point out some seriously mistaken teachings.

It is true that God is love, but there are no TYPES of love (agape, philos, eros and storge, those are types of love RELATIONSHIPS). I think that our misunderstanding of love is the biggest mistake in learning to be Godly (GODLY Christianity as opposed to BIBLICAL Christianity) and that even common sense tells you that love is a singular attitude ("God is one" Galatians 3:20). But it is also the lack of sincere, unbiased compassion because we insist on being judicial, bureaucratic, partisan and empirical in our studies and devotion. Aside from being taught that PROTOCOL that we are taught is necessary for devotion, not only are we encouraged to disregard CONSCIENCE (the tree that Adam and Eve ate from, I AM self comes from conscience). Of course, 'self' is abused in order to infringe on other's rights, but God looks at the heart of SELF (I AM, which is the first name God used to identify Himself to a people He chose to be His own...when He spoke to Moses). We inherited the ability to develop a conscience from the parents of the human race and are now responsible for our actions and that is why we nedd Jesus. But in our efforts and teaching to be bureaucratic and follow protocol, we learn to disregard conscience and ignore the consequences of our actions (pain, misery, suffering) and limit ourselves to being BIBLICAL, not GODLY. We are taught to FEAR God even though we are also taught to love God with ALL our heart, mind, soul and strength (where does fear fit with ALL?). 1 John 4:18 very clearly says that there is no fear in love (of course, unbelievers should learn to fear and acknowledge Him, but that is only the BEGINNING of wisdom and once they know Him, they will only LOVE Him). It is MAN that makes fear a commandment (Isaiah 29:13). It is also the teaching that our goal should be to avoid recieving the 'black check marks' and the DEMERITS of sin for the reason of being eligible for a 'blue ribbon' or gold medal award. We are taught to ignore consequences (suffering, etc.) and only be a good sport in order to win a 'GOODNESS' competition. It is no surprise that traditional Christianity has lost it's attraction to REAL people. It is not the God I love who has forsaken the people, it is the self-righteous, and even then (to be fair), it is unfortunately, human nature to be blinded by the god of confusion so as not to understand "the depths of God" 1 Corinthians 2:10).
When we first come to Christ, we recieve everlasting life (salvation), but learn only the ELEMENTARY doctrine of Christ (Hebrews 6:1) and maturity comes by learning to make DISTINCTIONS (Hebrews 5:14, as opposed to measuring and classifying types of sins) and understanding that our deeds carry consequences that cause suffering. Not often have I found such sincerity as in an unbeliever (ironic, isn't it?).

I can't help but think God wanted us to relate to Him by understanding who we are ("I AM") and wants US to address our burdens (knowing that we have His guidance available) and developing our conscience (Phelemon verse 14).
