Religion is probably most often defined as "each persons" way of observing whatever is most meaningful to us. For some, it seems to be, simply a philosophical summary of peace (as I understand Buddhism). If we define religion as a simple partisan allegiance to a diety, we are still observing what is most meaningful to us. In the sense that I observe (worship, and live according to) my diety (what is most meaningful to me), I have religion, but it is not partisan (like a club or "cause") and does not dictate my thoughts and actions. My kindness is "out of the goodness of MY heart", it is not partisan (not simply according to rules), but I still do live accordingly and observe my faith. As long as a person OBSERVES whatever they have chosen to follow OR believe, that is their "religion". Some don't choose a diety and still OBSERVE (Buddhism) ?philosophy?
But, you can't really have one without the other. The present title of this forum is probably the best one because it offers an explanation.
