A person can feel a deep connection to life, other living beings, a cause, anything, that can become a motivation for living in certain ways versus others. To me this is spiritual experience, a perfectly human experience, that has nothing to do with worshiping a god.
While I'm at it, all of the benificent qualities ascribed by religious people to their respective religions, are human qualities. Patience, compassion, love, caring, etc. --- all human qualities.
I have a spirit, like our dog has a spirit, although I'm envious of hers! It transcends physical boundaries. Some things matter more than safety, comfort and self-protection -- these things rile our spirits. This is spirituality, and we've all got it. It has nothing to do with fancy ideas. Of course, when we die, there goes the spirit.
