Yes its hard to evolve even spiritually when you are put in a spiritual box, such as religion has done!
Evolution as a species is only necassary to adapt to your surroundings. The human species great success in our physical environment is no longer necassary. However this great success has caused us to dominate our environement to the point of our own detriment. Our spiritual evolution however is necessary to awaken us to the fact that the laws of survival must include a more encompassing view and the connection between our continued success includes nurturing our environment as apposed to the old meme of dominence! These old tenets that arose out of the need to survive must be re examined and a new and and more inclusive, one with nature, concept must arise if we are to survive and rise above the muck and chaos that we have created!
