Obviously if it is at all possible to remain sober and make an attempt to better your life and mend what might have been broken, I am in full support of what any former drinker / drug addict is doing for themselves.
Having said that, it is exactly the thought process in the response above and how it is presented to people entering addiction or alcoholism treatment that do the most damage. Now, it doesn't matter how much you drank or for how long. You always have the choice to control your intake of these poisonous substances. I don't care if you've been drinking or drugging for scores of years (Ray Charles was a heroin addict for at least 20 years, as was Miles Davis: These men quit and stayed sober on their own); the fact remains that you can control your behavior: the behavior of "selfishly ingesting drugs to avoid coping with life (Jeff Schaler)."
For anyone that isn't aware of this, Alcoholics Anonymous and its various offshoots are direct derivatives of a Christian fundamentalist sect known as "Buchmanism" and the "Moral Re-Armament." This group, founded by William Buchman, made it clear that salvation was achieved by giving up your life to the care of the Christian concept of a supreme being.
I would reccomend a much MUCH more useful and rational method to control your ingestion of mind altering substances. Everyone, EVERYONE involved in a 12 step recovery program should read "Addiction is a Choice" by Jeff Schaler. Much of the brainwashing present in 12-step dogma is debunked here, and a much more rational view of addiction and how to cease it are presented.
