First off, I would suggest that nobody buy a new car until they produce envirnomentally friendly ones. The hybrids are a start, they could have been out 10 years ago. The industry is stalling on this [pun].
People are making their OWN solar cars [see link], so I think the auto-makers could too!!
-------
ISSUEs -
In any case, there are issues about cars that are not considered. The engines put off a big EMF field [ electomagnetic energy], and I believe we are affected by it - its likely much stronger than the overhead high voltage lines give off, due to proximity being such a major factor.
When I switched from a big ol' SUV that had been given to me as a cruel joke [ I hate them] to a small Hyundai, there was much less bad energy. Maybe it was 'psyco-social', but the large engine in the SUV made so much weird noise and so on I can't help but think it was EMF bugging me. Testing is needed to measure the EMF fileds on vehicles.
I really did feel bad driving that SUV.I am so much happier without it. Gas costs alone were three times what I pay now [official mileage ratings are skewed].
The worst problem is that SUVs get away with NOT being classed as "passenger vehicles" as they are built on a truck frame. [but they mostly carry passengers -DUH!!].
Truck frame vehicles do not have to meet the same emission standards that cars do, to let industry , with their costly transportation expenses, to not bear the cost of pollution [thats the stated reason in fact].
Passenger vehicles have stronger emission standards, to keep smog at lower levels. Until they make all passenger vehicles , incl SUVs, required to meeet the higher standards or lower emissions, please boycott them, do not buy a new one!!
The auto industry would produce a more responsible lower emissions vehicle within 6 mos of a boycott, I believe. Maybe a year...
If we would have insisted on this in the 1980s, it would be a done deal with much less GGs in our atmosphere, and the current hurricanes might be much less severe - its that connected people, lets do the right thing NOW!!!!!
The cost of lower emissions was and is an issue. But we did manage to afford CD, DVDs, air bags, and all sorts of fancy aditions to vehicles during this time period when we really needed to reduce emissions.
The discussion of cars is not complete without mentioning that the oil industry is what drives car makers motives in designing engines. Its the defintion of conspiracy. We can break it by hitting them where it counts -don't buy new cars. But I know it won't happen because +50%* of us still have no concerns about global warming... despite this Hurricane season's witness to global warming effects making weather more severe.
*[gee whiz, 55% of us support BushCO's Iraqi oilwar as being something else, so how could they possibly see the other conspiracies?]
