Even when you have your computer protected to the Max, you may be unable to prevent spam, and nothing is worse than gettting unsolicitated spam related to pump and dump stocks, p 0 r n o g r a p h y, pharmaceutical drugs, etc., etc.,
First to fully understand the problem, you need to ask yourselves, why do you get spam in the first place. While there may be many reasons, the primary reason is that your E-mail address got leaked by a unscrupulous sales site or forum that was looking to make a profit off the sale off your E-Mail. In some cases, it may not have been the online sales site that you purchased something from directly but a dishonest employee who worked for the site.
Now, how do you prevent spam knowing this. The best way by far is to create an alternative E-mail address for online transactions and registration forums only and nothing else. You still keep your regular pop mail E-Mail address but share it only with your most trusted friends and family.
While there are many choices for E-Mail addresses, the following are probably your best options.
http://www.mailexpire.com This site lets you create self expiring e-mail addresses, which means when the spammer gets wind of your e-mail address, you get the last laugh cause you just terminate the e-mail address - spam problem solved and not a damn thing a spammer can do to counter it.

This lets you create a anti-spam e-mail address, where a spammer is forced to agree to pay you for any spam s/he sends you and which spammer(s) wants to pay you to send spam since they are all out to make a profit.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2120/
This lets you create temporary e-mail addresses on the fly directly from your browser, which means that you can use these instead of your real e-mail address to register on forums or provide to on-line sale sites in order to prevent being spammed. Your real e-mail address never comes into play so is never spammed and you can terminate any one of these on-the fly e-mail addresses anytime.
The only thing with this is that you have to be using firefox browser for it to work and cannot use it if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer.
You can download mozilla firefox browser from here:

If you just want a way to screen out spam from legitimate E-Mail and use only your real e-mail address, this freemail screening program is the perfect solution.

Finally, if spammers just piss you off so much like they do me, you may want to consider forwarding their spam directly to Knujon(you have to sign up) of spamcop as these sites take active action to shut down spammers and their sites. http://www.knujon.com/knujon.html

Anyone who reads this post may rightly think, that's a lot of information. But keep in mind that any one of these anti-spam strategies alone or in combination will give you some measure of relief from spam. Some like Knujon and spamcop will take the longest to show some benefit and are largely for people who like getting spam for the purpose shutting the spammers down.
I hope members find this information useful. From my own experience, I discovered the above anti-spam strategies to be the most effective, epecially when deployed in combination.
Best Wishes.
