Dear 26098,
I have no answers for you, as much as I would like to help.
But I'd like to point out the change in your tone in the last two paragraphs of your post.
As with every problem, there is always more to the story, points-of-view that the outsider can't discern.
You and your husband (and your son) know yourselves best; and what you really want; what you all are prepared to do to get it.
There is a TV show called 'Supernanny' that you might enjoy. The key to Jo's success in apparently hopeless situations lies, I believe, in each family member fulfilling the others' happiest needs.
Simple time together, doing something all enjoy, erases 'unacceptable behavior' like magic.
Simple, fair, reliable exercises teach the children what is expected, and the parents follow through with the attention, love, and laughter the children need.
...Not particularly adult, I suppose, but wonderfully easy to understand; and effective.
Hm-m-m... Jo's methods might work well in dealing with oneself. Couldn't hurt.
You'll think of things that will help your family in the next steps, I know.
My best,
fledgling
