India Post uses a unique post code system called Postal Index Number (PIN). This system was introduced by Sri. Shriram Bhikaji Velankar in the year 1972 to streamline the sorting and sending of mails. PIN code is a 6 digit code that identifies a particular state or region and helps in the swift delivery of posts. India has 9 PIN regions out of which 8 represent geographical regions and the remaining one is for the Army Postal Service. In addition to this, the first 3 of these 6 digits of code represent the sub region and the bits of help in sorting the district. The remaining 3 digits signify the exact post office where mails are to be delivered.
