Last year, the Spanish town of Narón launched a healthy lifestyle initiative for its almost 40,000 residents. The goal was for the residents to lose a combined 220.462 lbs. (100.000 kg) in 2 years. In other words, and through medical monitoring, the town’s residents had to eat healthily and exercise. [1]
Although the average rate for obesity in Spain is 17.03%, in the region of Galicia, it’s 19.18%. While this may seem high for Spain, it’s much lower than the U.S. where the lowest obesity rate is 22.6%! [2]
From the town’s 40,000 residents, 3,000 are obese. According to Carlos Piñeiro, the doctor overseeing the initiative, the purpose was to promote a healthier lifestyle, not to lose weight. He added;
“Our town had a rate among the lowest in Galicia, but Galicia still has a very high rate of obesity.”
