It isn't patronizing. It is a beloved nickname that people that cared about her, gave to her. I think it's cute. I doubt if she will ever like the name Rusty. The name is tied to too much drama. However, I'm ok with Rosa. That is my grand daughter's name. Can't get upset with that one. By the way, how are your grand kids? I bet I would not even recognize them.
