the 2002 denali quake had similar effects in the southeast.  well levels went up and down in georgia and boats were rocking back and forth in the bayous of louisianna from it.  that quake happened far inland instead of off shore like this current one.  i am surprised at the dumbed down level of the article a the link.  compare the graphics there to this map of the arvidson lineament.  this is a second shot that i know of that shows how easily seismic energy can be directed along this fault.  you can google for more.  could trigger the new madrid.
