No, they were not told to break the commandments. But they were brought in under a completely New Covenant. Do a study on the New Covenant vs. the Old.

Also, here's a link for you that you might find helpful. This guy came out of the same Sabbath keeping church I did. He does a good job covering the Sabbath subject I think as well as other subjects, although I'm sure I wouldn't agree with him on everything:
