"Myself, I'll take a couple of drops of 5% Lugols (& supplements) a day for a few days, then stop for a few days."

This would be why your thyroid would turn on this break is the only thing what prevents you from getting hypo or hyper if you have a bad thyroid , i read on forums about people who have their thyroid removed who can go for months without taking hormones without to much negative symptoms .

"Excess Iodide transiently inhibits thyroid Iodide organification. In individuals with a normal thyroid, the gland eventually escapes from this inhibitory effect and Iodide organification resumes; however, in patients with underlying autoimmune thyroid disease, the suppressive action of high iodide may persist.[8] The Wolff–Chaikoff effect lasts several days (around 10 days), after which it is followed by an "escape phenomenon "

lets say steve had graves why would he become hyper and then hypo , graves is hyper if the Wolff–Chaikoff effect did not work he should have become hypo in that 2.5 year
