This thread is 13 years old and yet these are the only comments I can find on the subject of breaking a water fast. It's true, breaking a fast brings on a great deal of anxiety. I just completed a a very successful and effective 21 day fast. Once I got past all the hunger pains (day 4) the fast was surprisingly satisfying. I've been instructed to eat a handful of Watermelon every two hours for the next 24-36 hours. It's very delicious and so far no reaction (my ears usually itch and my tongue would swell whenever I consume any type of melon). It's strange though, I'm very anxious about eating again. It may sound crazy but there was an overwhelming sense of calm that came over me while fasting. People chalk it up to some 'spiritual experience'. I don't know about that. All I know is that eating has been very stressful for me for about 11 years; what do I eat that won't inflame the endometriosis? What do I eat so I do not irritate my GI tract? What do I eat so I'm not feeding the Lyme bacteria (they feast on sugar, protein and steroids like nobody's business)? What can I eat that I won't have an allergic reaction to? What do I buy at store? What can I prepare for both husband and I to eat together (usually nothing)? I was able to silence all that anxiety for 21 days. So now, and likely out of habit, all that dialogue runs through my head making me very anxious. The next thing I'm supposed to eat/make is homemade applesauce and I'm already fighting with the fact that it's too much fruit and my insulin has always ran very high even in a restive state (...and no, I am not diabetic because my glucose is always lower than the healthiest person in the room--something that has perplexed all my physicians over the years). Ye gads....this is probably TMI. ANYWAY....I really didn't want to end the fast. I think my body still has a lot more healing to do and I may take another stab at fasting after I settle into my new home (need all my strength and brain cells to make that move). In the meantime, I'm preparing to make a variety of homemade vegetable soups. I prefer to consume more vegetables than fruits since Sugar from fruit has been troublesome in the past with my body. I wish raw veggies were more appealing to my palate but they simply aren't. The challenge is really that there isn't a great deal of info on effectively breaking a lengthy water fast.
