Depression and irritability are nothing but adjustments during early part of the fast. It is similar to processes that happen after cessation of coffee, tea, alcohol, drugs, etc. Most people are addicted to one of these substances.

It does pass and one achieves mental clarity.

I have never felt depressed during a fast, irritable? Yes, in most of my fasts.
