I must have read that passage at least 100 times since becoming a Christian, and such an interpretation never occurred to me. Must be coz I'm a dullard. However, I'm not too concerned that I missed anything of any real consequence, coz I find myself in excellent company: it never occurred to Paul either (2 Cor. 11:3 and 1 Tim. 2:13).

I guess the trappist treatment might have something to do with this warning from the main man himself:

To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Titus 1:15-16
