We do both, coz they are not mutually exclusive.The writings of great Christian writers, scholars, theologians, reformers, etc. who have gone before us are simply an aid to study, not a substitute for the Bible.

If either you or trapper paid more heed to any of them, you might have been spared some of the worst excesses of your 'interpretations'.
