"Mother-in-law’s Tongue, also known as Snake Plant (West Africa) and Tiger’s Tail (Japan), (Sansevieria trifasciata), has been used medicinally in many cultures for centuries. Both its leaves (the shape of which give rise to its names) and rhizomes are used – and are have been used to treat asthma, bronchitis and coughs, as well as for insect bite, snake bite and other afflictions.
Researchers from the Departments of Pharmacology, at Sinhgad College of Pharmacy and Sinhgad Institute of Pharmaceutical Science in Pune and Lonavala, India have studied how an axtract of this plant works in terms of its antiallergic effects, as it is known to elicit analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic responses.
For the research, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, the researchers took an ethanolic extract of S. trifasciata leaves (EEST) and found that this EEST demonstrated a promising antiallergic and anti-anaphylactic activities and also elicited potent antioxidant activity.
They hypothesized that thess antiallergic and anti-anphylactic activity might be due to inhibition of release of chemical mediators from mast cells largely by phytoconstituents like steroidal saponins, triterpenoids and flavonoids present in EEST."
