Personally, I think this is too harsh as well. It doesn't matter particularly what the scrub is made out of , it's just the act of manually scrubbing it that is likely to cause injury. A doctor told me that scabs or crusts or skin flakes are effectively like biological dressing, protecting vulnerable skin underneath. I know it's hard to deal with a constant layer of unsightly dead skin on your lips but picking it off (even in non EC areas) using any method is not going to help long term.
