Recently I've been reading through the fastingconnection forum threads, specifically the Posts for The Fast Doctor section. There is a lot of information. Since Dr. Kruger has lots of experience and is an MD, I think that he is somewhat trustworthy, though obviously he is one person and as a natural hygienist has certain prejudices... That aside, what he has to say on breaking a *water* fast:
- You should break it with whole fruit (juicing is not necessary) in small amounts and increase slowly.
- Eating protein before the body's want for energy is satisfied will lead to conversion of protein to carbohydrate.
- This leads to the creation of toxic ammonia with associated problems.
- Eating fat after the fast is dangerous, because it can lead to ketoacidosis from too great an amount of ketones in the blood.
Now, I would love to ask Dr. Kruger what he thinks of the ketogenic diet in relation to breaking the fast, but haven't been able to contact him, unfortunately.
Also I was thinking why those POWs you referred to before died... My idea would be that they had done permanent damage by stress and going to far into starvation. You have to consider that their condition was highly different from somebody fasting for health, especially their mental state would be opposite, which I think is important for how the body handles the stress of fasting.
Also, I think that *sweets* might mean chocolate, cookies, cake etc., not necessarily pure sugar, so their deaths might also have been caused by too high a *caloric* intake too quickly due to the extremely high palatability of the fat-sugar combination which interferes with biofeedback, as well as them not paying attention to biofeedback.
