Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7 and Exodus 3:6 at least imply it, and Dan. 12:2 and Mt 22:32 (Jesus' own interpretation of Ex. 3:6) confirm it. That's quite apart from all the other NT passages that confirm the reality of a conscious intermediate state for both saved and lost, and a corresponding eternal state for both. Obviously you have a different interpretation as far as the lost are concerned, but your arguments are largely contrived, groundless, or simply self-serving.

The imagery used may be symbolic, etc., but if it doesn't mean eternal conscious torment for the lost, then language has ceased to have any settled meaning. No doubt it is unpalatable. Most (if not all) atheists and even some who profess a religious belief will be thoroughly disgusted by such a concept, and even cite it as a reason for rejecting Christianity and its claims. Unfortunately for humanity, God's truth is not determined by a plebiscite of humanity. Our social, religious, ethical and racial mores are constantly changing - God's are, by definition, the same yesterday, today, and forever. To some, that makes Him a stick in the mud who can be safely ignored. To others, it proves the legitimacy of His claims on their lives, which are so important to Him that He was willing to sacrifice His own Son to draw them to Him.

It all sounds so unfair, but when you recall that none of us are deserving of anything but His wrath, that the very best of our own efforts are still as filthy rags to Him, I consider it a minor miracle if even just one person is saved. And I'm sure that many, many more than one will be saved, including many who have never even heard the gospel. The rest is in God's hands, and no clever arguments from either of us can ever circumvent or thwart His plans for us.

Sermon for the day now over.
