My dad's not taking these things we just talked about literally. It's a joke. You told a joke, and so I told my dad's little silly joke.
Yeah, I got that. Funny, innit, what a joke about gnashers in hell can lead to? Both your grandma and your dad understand that when we are talking about hell, we are dealing with the non-physical, the immaterial, the incorporeal.......in other words, the spirit realm and spiritual realities, albeit evil in nature. Yet both insist on using very literal imagery to prove a point about CI. Now who's employing double-standards in their hermeneutics?
To wit (too hoo):
My grandmother, who held to the Conditional Immortality view also, was asked one time at church by the pastor, "So you don't believe in hell?" And she said, "Oh no, I most certainly believe in hell, I just believe that it's hot enough to actually burn you up!" :)
and:
I was talking to my dad tonight. He was telling me the story of when he got badly burned in his twenties. He was very seriously burned and thought he was going to die. He was in the hospital for many months. I've heard the story before but not quite like he told it tonight. Anyway, he said he'll listen to someone talk about the eternal torment hell view if they'll just put one finger tip on a hot stove as they are talking. lol
If this subject were not so serious, these constructs would be quite risible. So for now, let me make just one simple point. You could put the soul of a human reprobate at the centre of the hottest star in the Universe (that's about 100 billion kelvin to you, give or take a few billion), and that soul would not feel a thing, coz there is no physical matter to burn. It's quite simple really, once you understand the basic concept. The imagery of smoke, unquenchable fire, flames, etc., is just that - imagery to depict the suffering of the lost. Your grandma is quite mistaken, therefore, if she seriously believes (it's quite hard to tell sometimes, bearing in mind your comments above) that any hell 'fire' can destroy a human soul.
No evangelical believer I have ever met who holds to 'ECT' (as you call it) believes these poor souls are writhing in agony for want of an effective ac unit. Their pain is on a spiritual plain that matches their spiritual existence, and emanates from their awareness of being eternally separated from the love of God and His glory (Lk 16:19-31 and 2 Thess. 1:9). You have all fallen into the trap of taking it quite literally, despite your protestations to the contrary.
As for your many other points in various posts, fear not. I shall address them all in due course. For now chuck, I must bid you a good night, and sweet dreams.
