I too work with young adults that have Aspergers or high level ASD. They come to our non-profit org, sometimes accompanied by a social worker.
They help us rebuild computers for other non profits and struggling families.
A few have the intellectual ability to one day work in technology, especially if they make progress in ability to interact with co workers and managers.
We saw one teen who was with us for his four years of high school develop rather nicely. He is now in college and occasionally comes back to visit. He clearly has progressed to the point he will be quite employable. I don't know if he has healed enough to be ready for marriage and family responsibilities. I'm certainly routing for him!
When my health was at its worst I had a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder. However in retrospect I was pretty close to being an Aspie.
I certainly had the odd shyness, awkwardness in social situations, food sensitivities , personality quirks, ups and downs in mood, intellectual oddities, less than normal physical strength and masculinity, issues with stress tolerance, etc.
In my case heavy metals, especially lead and cadmium, were the biggest factors. I had been a healthy kid growing up. I did not have an ADD diagnosis and did not have most of the other symptoms. They developed gradually in my late 20's through my 30's.
I'm apparently not alone in this. AT 74% HM detox (chelation) was the highest rated intervention in this survey of parents of kids with ASD and Aspergers.

Today most of my symptoms are much improved or gone. Inattentive ADD is still a limiting factor in my life but the following symptoms are not:
Osteopaenia (low bone density)
Low eGFR (kidney) test numbers
Eye floaters long gone
More easy-going mood, especially with 1mg Lithium supplement, magnesium, glutamine.
MUCH more comfortable in social situations
I connect better with people I meet
Less fatigue
Less brain fog
Just tiny doses of adrenal cortex support--pregnenolone & DHEA--provide a nice gentle-manly feel and personality. My lady friend likes me on them too ; )
I don't pull muscles so often.
I rarely catch a cold now, instead of fighting a cold so much of the Winter. Zinc has been helpful with that.
I don't get dizzy upon standing, especially if I have not eaten in a while.
My blood Sugar seems much more stable.
I'm not so hyperactive after eating certain foods, probably those with phenols.
Osteoarthritis is well maintained with glucosamine sulfate.
After more than a decade of sensitivity to acidic foods and some reflux, I no longer have limitations. I can even intentionally consume a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar during a big meal.
Sensitivity--panic, breathing attack--to certain odors is long gone.
No longer sensitive on my tongue to walnuts.
Normal memory recall when taking a little phosphatdylcholine or similar.
Virtually never have athletes foot.
I'm sure there are a few minor things I've forgotten.
My point is to NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!!!
Continue to look for clues and leads!
